Saturday Visitors!

Lia Update:  Not a whole lot of new to report on Miss Lia tonight.  She had a pretty good day.  She did throw up once, and we THINK we might have that narrowed down to the multi-vitamin they are giving her.  Who knows though...

We are starting something new this weekend with her.  In order to try and get her to take some food orally, they have decided to try and 'skim' my breastmilk.  This is a new process, here at Children's Mercy.  I am only the 3rd breastfeeding mother to attempt it.  If you remember, Lia can't have any of my breastmilk because she can't have any fatty-acids due to a cut in her chylo gland that happened during one of her surgeries.  She is on a fat-free formula, called enfaport, which she hates.  The nurses even told me it pretty much tastes like plastic.  SO, in order to skim my milk, they take some of my breast milk that has sat for 24 hours and literally scrape the fat off the top of the milk after it separates.  Then, they wait a while longer and scrape more fat off the top of the milk, and wah-lah, you have skim breast milk.  The idea is to get her to take about 10 cc's of my breast milk, and continue with the enfaport feedings through her NG tube.  HOPEFULLY she will get her 'suck' back after she realizes shes got the "good stuff" again.  She will need to continue on the enfaport until her chylo gland has had time to heal, and then she will be able to take breast milk again.  I hope that made sense...tried to explain it best I could :)

Lia had lots of visitors today!  We had a surprise visit today from Ryan's Aunt Sue and her sister, Jamie.  Then, my friend Lynn, (music teacher at Linwood) was in town for the weekend and stopped to see us too!  Then tonight, our good friends, Zach, Brooke, and Jenna came to see us and took us out for dinner!  We loved having the company today, and were so thankful to get out tonight for some great food and conversation!  We haven't laughed that hard and been that care-free in a long time.  It felt really good.

Tomorrow, we are looking forward to even more visitors!  Thanks for checking in, and continuing to pray for us.  The light at the end of the tunnel is getting brighter.  Hopefully, soon we will be able to put all of this behind us, and take our little girl home.

9 1/2 Hours

9 1/2 hours until my sweet baby girl goes in for her third open heart surgery.  This isn't just any surgery.  It's a big one.  This surgery would be a big deal for a 40 year old.  So you can imagine the seriousness and high risk on a 3 week old.  I am nauseous and scared.  I pray with all my heart that her little body can handle the intensity and recovery involved with something this big.  The nurses have prepared us for the worst, which I am thankful for, but am remaining optimistic and strong in faith.  They have told me that she will be VERY sick for several days following her surgery.  She may even come back to her room in the PICU still on bypass.  Even if she doesn't come back on bypass, she could still go back on it a few days later.  In addition to all her machines and medicines now, she will also come back with a pacemaker, and possibly the ECMO (bypass) machine. Praising God!!!

Lia has had a REALLY good 24 hours! She passed her carseat test! Has taken ALL her feedings orally! Feeding tube is OUT! Breathing treatments have been cancelled! Ryan and I have started a 24 hr PCS (parent care status) where we are completely in charge of all feedings and medications.  The nurse will only check on us periodically. This is done to make sure we will be able to handle everything at home. NO MONITORS!  I just walked into our bathroom with Lia...simply because I COULD! Pharmacy has come to talk to us about all her prescriptions, and how to administer all medications. Got a basket ready for all the 'skimming' supplies I'll need for home. Arrangements have been made for follow up care with cardiologist and pediatrician! Discharge, yes, I said it, DISCHARGE scheduled for Tuesday!  Ok, I'm crying now that I just typed that!
