Good Things Happening!

I decided to do a mid-day post, because so many good things are happening here today!  One little step backwards did happen though too, Lia has chylothorax, so she can't have any of my breast milk for a while (at least 6 weeks) and is on a special formula for babies with that.  If you don't know what chylothorax is, you can click on the word, and it will take you to a much better definition than what I could give.

In other news, Lia's pacemaker is turned OFF and her pacemaker wires have been pulled out of her chest!  She is off all of her continuous meds, is almost weaned off her oxygen, has the oxygen monitor off her forehead, her catheter is out, and she even pooped this morning!  They are moving her into a crib even!  She is still doing her breathing treatments, and has her central line just in case they would need it for anything.  She also still has her feeding tube because shes being very stubborn about eating.  Not only does she have to re learn how to suck, but now shes also learning the taste of something other than breast milk (her new formula), so that will take some getting used to as well.  I am attaching a picture of Lia's incision with no dressing covering it...don't look if you don't think you will like to see it.  Her staples should come out in a couple more days.

I got to hold her again this morning, and Ryan is going to do her next feeding (or attempt at it) so he will get to hold her too!  Our nurse also told us today that we could bring some clothes in to put on her!  Yay for wearing clothes again!

Things are really looking up.  There has even been some talk about moving out of the PICU onto the floor tomorrow, but I'm trying not to get my hopes up in case that doesn't happen.

Oh what good news, she is so strong to have made it to where she is now! When she gets older she will "rock" that zipper I'm sure :-) It will tell everyone what she is capable of. I can't wait to see you be able to bling her out with the cutsey wootsey stuff !! Congrats on the continued progress, Love Janet

I'm catching upon several days of Lia progress posts so it was awesome that you had a mid-day post! What exciting, good news...PTL again & again! The "zipper" will be a constant reminder of God's glorious work in Lia's early days. I love the 4 week pic after her oxygen tube was removed. What a sweet look that says "I'm so glad that's out...whew!" Ashley, I know how much you don't like birds, so I got a chuckle out of the eagles nest pic. :) So happy for you & Ryan to get to hold Lia again. The sucking/feeding things will come. It's what babies do best!

9 1/2 Hours

9 1/2 hours until my sweet baby girl goes in for her third open heart surgery.  This isn't just any surgery.  It's a big one.  This surgery would be a big deal for a 40 year old.  So you can imagine the seriousness and high risk on a 3 week old.  I am nauseous and scared.  I pray with all my heart that her little body can handle the intensity and recovery involved with something this big.  The nurses have prepared us for the worst, which I am thankful for, but am remaining optimistic and strong in faith.  They have told me that she will be VERY sick for several days following her surgery.  She may even come back to her room in the PICU still on bypass.  Even if she doesn't come back on bypass, she could still go back on it a few days later.  In addition to all her machines and medicines now, she will also come back with a pacemaker, and possibly the ECMO (bypass) machine. Praising God!!!

Lia has had a REALLY good 24 hours! She passed her carseat test! Has taken ALL her feedings orally! Feeding tube is OUT! Breathing treatments have been cancelled! Ryan and I have started a 24 hr PCS (parent care status) where we are completely in charge of all feedings and medications.  The nurse will only check on us periodically. This is done to make sure we will be able to handle everything at home. NO MONITORS!  I just walked into our bathroom with Lia...simply because I COULD! Pharmacy has come to talk to us about all her prescriptions, and how to administer all medications. Got a basket ready for all the 'skimming' supplies I'll need for home. Arrangements have been made for follow up care with cardiologist and pediatrician! Discharge, yes, I said it, DISCHARGE scheduled for Tuesday!  Ok, I'm crying now that I just typed that!
