Michael's Pet Snake

I lost 2 students today....one is moving to Texas, and the other to Missouri. Michael's (student moving to TX) mom wanted to know if she could bring some cupcakes in for his last day at Linwood, I thought that would be just great! Little did I know, that she would also be bringing Michael's pet snake! The students LOVED holding it and petting it! I didn't have a single student who didn't want to hold it!
Just when I think that we are putting the snake away, Michael's mom asks me if I want a turn to hold it. I kindly say "Oh, I'm sure it's been passed around enough..." hoping she would realize that I wanted nothing to do with the snake. Unfortunately for me, all the kids started chanting "Mrs. Shields Mrs. Shields, Mrs. Shields" so I was basically forced to hold the snake. Especially after Michael's mom said "how are you going to let these 6 year olds show you up?" I KNOW this picture is H O R R I B L E of me.....but I thought it did a great job of capturing the moment and exactly how i felt. I got scared when the snake moved it's head a little bit and made her take it back from me, holding the snake for a grand total of 2 seconds. Basically just enough time for Michael's mom to take this pic of me. Of course all the students laughed and thought it was hilarious. They told me I was a "scardy cat." I told them, "just be glad this isn't a bird...."

Like I said earlier, I lost 2 students which now puts my class at 19! I am the next first grade teacher to get a new student, so we'll see if that happens any time soon! Oh, and by the way, it was 74 degrees here today! In February! Half my class didn't even come to school with coats today because it was in the 50s when school started this morning!

lol!! i dont know how you did it!! i wouldnt have even been able to hack two seconds of it!!! i would have seen it and started hyperventilating!!! kudos to you!!!!

9 1/2 Hours

9 1/2 hours until my sweet baby girl goes in for her third open heart surgery.  This isn't just any surgery.  It's a big one.  This surgery would be a big deal for a 40 year old.  So you can imagine the seriousness and high risk on a 3 week old.  I am nauseous and scared.  I pray with all my heart that her little body can handle the intensity and recovery involved with something this big.  The nurses have prepared us for the worst, which I am thankful for, but am remaining optimistic and strong in faith.  They have told me that she will be VERY sick for several days following her surgery.  She may even come back to her room in the PICU still on bypass.  Even if she doesn't come back on bypass, she could still go back on it a few days later.  In addition to all her machines and medicines now, she will also come back with a pacemaker, and possibly the ECMO (bypass) machine. Praising God!!!

Lia has had a REALLY good 24 hours! She passed her carseat test! Has taken ALL her feedings orally! Feeding tube is OUT! Breathing treatments have been cancelled! Ryan and I have started a 24 hr PCS (parent care status) where we are completely in charge of all feedings and medications.  The nurse will only check on us periodically. This is done to make sure we will be able to handle everything at home. NO MONITORS!  I just walked into our bathroom with Lia...simply because I COULD! Pharmacy has come to talk to us about all her prescriptions, and how to administer all medications. Got a basket ready for all the 'skimming' supplies I'll need for home. Arrangements have been made for follow up care with cardiologist and pediatrician! Discharge, yes, I said it, DISCHARGE scheduled for Tuesday!  Ok, I'm crying now that I just typed that!
