Sign it! Sign it!

As many of you know, the Iowa House of Representatives recently passed the Pulse Ox bill 88-4! (I know, what 4 people would vote NO to something like this??) But anyway, the next step in the process is to get Governor Branstad to sign the bill. If you don't know what Pulse Ox screening is, click HERE.  I was given the opportunity, along with several other CHD families, to talk with Branstad today about the importance of the screening, and to hopefully influence him into signing.  Ryan and I took Lia with us too, in hopes that she might have some sort of 'woo' effect on him.

Beautiful day in DesMoines!

Here, Branstad is listening to what we call an 'angel' mom.  She gave birth to twins, and one of the twins scored low on the APGAR scale, so he was given a pulse ox test.  The twin who showed no symptoms that would require a pulse ox test passed away 6 weeks later from a CHD. She brought pictures of her angel baby.  I don't think there was a dry eye in the room.
I was able to personally talk with the Governor about Lia's story.  As you know, we had no idea during my entire pregnancy that she had a CHD.  We were lucky that she had symptoms at birth (blue skin, and heart murmur) otherwise she may not have gotten the pulse ox either.

Gosh, I love that smile!

If you haven't had a chance to visit our Team Lia page for the Des Moines Heart Walk coming up in June, please do so!  We would love to have you on our team, even if you're not able to walk.  The American Heart Association is doing some amazing things for patients and families affected by heart disease. You can visit the page by clicking on this link:
Other than our own daughter, Ryan and I both come from families with heart disease. Chances are, if it's not in your family, you know someone affected by heart disease.  If you are interested in ordering a Team Lia t-shirt, please send me a message at a.shields@hotmail.com

Hi Ashley! Has Terry signed the bill into law yet? If not, what's he waiting for?! After meeting Lia and all those other miracles, I'm sure he'll come through. Way to push for your cause! So proud of you! Rob and I would love to join you in the walk but that is the same day as our Relay for Life. I'm on a Team Daisy of PEO ladies walking in memory of Margaret Wolfe and Helen Thorne AND in honor of Sue Spencer. We'll be thinking about you, though. Have fun! Love & blessings, Tammy

9 1/2 Hours

9 1/2 hours until my sweet baby girl goes in for her third open heart surgery.  This isn't just any surgery.  It's a big one.  This surgery would be a big deal for a 40 year old.  So you can imagine the seriousness and high risk on a 3 week old.  I am nauseous and scared.  I pray with all my heart that her little body can handle the intensity and recovery involved with something this big.  The nurses have prepared us for the worst, which I am thankful for, but am remaining optimistic and strong in faith.  They have told me that she will be VERY sick for several days following her surgery.  She may even come back to her room in the PICU still on bypass.  Even if she doesn't come back on bypass, she could still go back on it a few days later.  In addition to all her machines and medicines now, she will also come back with a pacemaker, and possibly the ECMO (bypass) machine. Lia opened her eyes today, and looked around the ...

Praising God!!!

Lia has had a REALLY good 24 hours! She passed her carseat test! Has taken ALL her feedings orally! Feeding tube is OUT! Breathing treatments have been cancelled! Ryan and I have started a 24 hr PCS (parent care status) where we are completely in charge of all feedings and medications.  The nurse will only check on us periodically. This is done to make sure we will be able to handle everything at home. NO MONITORS!  I just walked into our bathroom with Lia...simply because I COULD! Pharmacy has come to talk to us about all her prescriptions, and how to administer all medications. Got a basket ready for all the 'skimming' supplies I'll need for home. Arrangements have been made for follow up care with cardiologist and pediatrician! Discharge, yes, I said it, DISCHARGE scheduled for Tuesday!  Ok, I'm crying now that I just typed that! Once again, thank you for all your continued support and prayer!  Don't we have an amazing God? These oral feedings r...
